tomato sandwiches

This summer I discovered my new favorite cooking show: "A Chef's Life".  It is about a couple who own, operate, and cook in their own restaurant called "The Chef and the Farmer".  What I like about it so much is that each episode features a specific ingredient that they will use in their restaurant, and they take the viewer to the farms where the ingredients are grown.  So what they make at the restaurant is very seasonal.  Being such a city girl, I love seeing peach trees and blueberry bushes, and things growing out of the ground, etc.  I love learning about the different varieties.  I love getting ideas of how to cook these ingredients.

Well, I got Hillary interested when I visited her.  And Mariah and I are especially hooked and wanting to try to make some of the dishes from the episodes.  One episode was all about corn.  They had a corn shucking, grilling and preparing family event.  Then the Chef used it in a lot of dishes in the restaurant.  But what fascinated us the most is that she made grilled-corn mayonnaise.

Then, in the tomato episode, we learned all about different varieties, including heirloom tomatoes.  She talked about how, in the south (this all takes place in North Carolina) a simple tomato sandwich is a popular thing.  But a not so simple tomato sandwich is something special, and it became a hit at the restaurant.  They made bread all garlicky and seasoned up and toasted; they spread homemade roasted-corn mayonnaise inside and topped it all with salt and peppered heirloom tomatoes.  It looked amazing so we decided to try to re-inact it.  Ross made the roasted corn mayonnaise, I made the bread and Mariah prepared the tomatoes.  It was yummy, although we forgot one key step:  we forgot to toast the bread.  So hurray hurray we get to try it again!

Variety is the spice of life and I am enjoying taking this new adventure with my loved ones.

That 1% was a great idea!

Wasting time on the internet is probably a bad idea - 99% of the time.  But tonight was the other 1%.  I heard about Taylor Swift's new song ME - and even though I haven't been much of a fan of hers since she left country music, I decided to check out the video.  I really like it!- especially because the guy she collaborated with is so talented.  So I asked Luke about it, and he came over to the computer.  We watched some of it and then he educated me on who Brandon Urie is and his group "Panic at the Disco".  And then, to my surprise, he showed me this video - the song is all about HOPE!  Hurray for Christmas in May!  (He showed me some other videos with this group - I think I'm just a 2 song fan.)

By then Mariah and Ross were home and we were all gathered around the computer; I told them part of the ME video reminded me of "Bye Bye Birdie", so we then naturally looked up a lot of songs from that.

99% of the time I regret wasting time on the internet.  But this 1% time was fun.

Happy Birthday month to Mariah!

It is a fun treat having her living here on her birthday.  I got to make her a cake.  She requested a specific one, which comes out of my Harry Potter Cookbook.  Since Hagrid was supposed to have made the cake it was okay if it looked messy, lopsided, etc.  In fact, it was very lopsided which really bothered me so I doctored it up by sticking two Oreos in the middle on one side.  I forgot to ask who got them in their slices.

But anyway - happy birthday to my beautiful daughter!

something I want to blog about, but Mariah, please don't read!

I guess the special gift that I am working on right now for Mariah will not be a huge surprise to her.  She might remember that I have been trying to keep a journal of memories and special moments of each of my kid's lives, and that I have given Julia & Hillary's to them right before they got married.  But I still hope she won't read this post until later.

Anyway, I am really trying to play catch-up in Mariah's journal, trying to fill it with my memories of her childhood.  I did keep up with it a little throughout the years, but I am writing in it a lot now.  And I do think there is something absolutely magical about ink leaving a pen and making words come alive on paper.  As I was watching my pen flow across the page today it reminded me of something out of Harry Potter - when someone wants to give their memories to someone else they put a magic wand up to their head and the memories flow into the wand.  I think that when ink flows out of a pen onto paper it makes what you are writing real and permanent.  I hope this journal lasts through the years, and maybe someday Mariah's grandchildren will enjoy reading about the cute little girl with the fiery red hair and personality.

On the other hand, I do admit that I can type faster than I write, but I'm sure the magic still happens as the ink flows from the printer ribbon to paper.  Since starting this blog in 2008 I realize that much of my memories of Mariah's teen years are recorded here.  If I had only been organized enough to put labels on each of my posts!  So now I am going back through the blog, labeling anything that had to do with Mariah, and then I will be printing it up and somehow adding it to her journal.  It is quite a task, but a labor of love, and I better get going on it!

long distance wedding planning

Since Mariah is no longer a college student but a working girl, she does not have the whole summer off to come home and wedding plan.  She/they/we are doing things long distance and I have to say that, from what I can tell, things are turning out great so far! - from dresses to decorations, etc.  We're so excited!

So far all of my sons in law were completely involved when it came to their own weddings, now including Ross.  I think that might be a good sign for a long and happy life together - making decisions together, keeping each other's interests in mind, etc.  But most importantly, at the end of the day, the following quote says it all:

& Ross

Here is something I've been sitting on for a while.  It wasn't appropriate to share it then, but I wrote about it to myself, cause I just needed to.  Now it is TOTALLY appropriate!

"Today is February 14th, 2014.  Reggie and I have been thinking a lot about Mariah lately because it feels like her life may be coming to a turning point soon.  She has of course been dating a lot in the huge "dating pool" that is a BYU town.  But in December she started telling us that she had just begun an exclusive relationship with a guy named Ross.  In December we were waiting around for her to tell us her flight information for coming home for Christmas, until she told us that she was getting a ride home from Ross and his brother, since they live in the Fresno area.  Okay, no big deal.  Then it was "I'm going to stay in Fresno a couple of days before I come home, just to meet his family."  Again she assured us that this was a new relationship, and so it was no big deal.  When she asked if Ross could come and meet us and stay with us a couple of days before they drove back to Utah, she promised that he was not going to be asking for her hand or anything - it was a new relationship after all.  Well, we really liked Ross.  Only time would tell if this new relationship was going to be long lasting, or even permanent.  By February - as in recently, Reggie and I have apparantly been having the same feeling.  Every night we pray for the safety of our children.  In my personal prayers I have been saying "please bless and keep safe Julia, Lester and Addy,  Hillary, Andrew and Audrey, Mariah and     " and then I stop myself, because Ross is not a part of the family.  There is no "understanding" at this point to make us plan him being part of the family.  But somehow it all of a sudden feels right and natural to say, in my prayers, "bless Mariah and Ross".  Earlier this week Reggie had a business trip to Utah and got to spend time with all of our "Utah" children.  He came home commenting on how good Mariah and Ross seem together.  Well, tonight as he was saying the family prayer, that is exactly how he put it: "bless Mariah and Ross".  It just feels right -  which we are not telling Mariah.   If Ross is the one for her, and if she is ready to settle down and take all the wonderfulness and craziness of marriage, it needs to be something that she thinks of herself, with no influence from anyone else.  So,  I guess we'll see."

And now we know!

ENGAGED!

Mariah and her FIANCE are in town for a few days!  Fiance, as of a few hours ago.  They officially got engaged tonight, at the beach at sunset.  (Ross told us his plans ahead of time, so we were able to spy and take pictures.)

We are very happy for the two of them - and for our family in general.  We are certainly being lucky in the son-in-law-department.  Now it's all about the wedding planning!

The best thing about April, for us

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARIAH!  So happy you came to our family 22 years ago.  We just wouldn't be the same/complete/fulfilled without you.

You know what she's doing now?

I am so proud of that Mariah.  Since becoming a certified nurse's assistant she was working with the elderly and now she's working with troubled teenage girls.  She seems to love it and says it is very challenging and rewarding.  She has a wonderful bedside manner and ability to be patient and empathetic.  I can't help but think how proud my Dad would be/is of her too.  I think that the older my Dad got the more he worried about his family.  He asked me every week how Mariah was doing - if she was happy, associating with good people, and most importantly if she had chosen a major and if she needed any help paying for school.  My Mom was always able to assure him that the kids/ the grandkids were doing fine - making their own, but good choices.  My Mom told me the other day how proud she is of Mariah, and I know that he would be very proud too of the life she has made for herself.  Mariah knew that once she got her education she could come home to look for a job in her field, but we also knew that she was enjoying her independence.  This did not offend us at all.  And we have met some of her "peeps" - the people she chooses to spend most of her time with.  Especially those people named Hillary, Andrew & Audrey Dobbins.  I'm happy that they live in the same town and get together often.

As far as what Mariah does next, there is one thing I know for sure - it will be something that SHE absolutely chooses and wants to do.  There are so many choices in this life - places to go, things to do, people to be  with.  I know that Mariah will choose exactly what Mariah wants, and it will be an adventure no matter what!

When Addy and I have our computer time together, watching Disney videos, I often put this one on and think of Mariah.  (Although she better never go rock climbing without some safety gear on.  That's just crazy!)

prom dress shopping

A few weeks ago Samantha told me that she really wanted to go to her senior prom and she had a couple of boys in mind that she wanted to ask.  I told her to hold off until we could talk about it a little more.  The next day she came home and said that she asked a boy today and he said yes.  I could not believe her bravery!  I wanted to prepare her to not be too sad if the boys said no - that's a possibility for anyone - but she went for it and it all worked out!  So now she has been in Heaven shopping for a prom dress.

Last Saturday I told her we could go to a couple of stores to look and she asked if Reggie could take her instead.  I gave Reggie the biggest smile and the biggest hug, and my honest opinion that he is the best Dad in the world.  Samantha remembered that Reggie took all of our girls prom dress shopping in their day and so she wanted to keep up with the tradition.  I don't think Reggie had intended to start this tradition - for Julia and Hillary he knew of an outlet store in the city that I didn't want to drive to, so the 4 of us went.  With Mariah - I love her with all of my heart! - but by the time her senior prom came around Reggie just understood her better than I did, and on one of those days when we needed a break from each other he took her out shopping and they found a dress; a beautiful, perfect for Mariah dress.  I was so proud of him.  And I got to be involved as well, in making a little jacket to go with the dress. So I did not/do not feel slighted at all that my girls have had the prom dress shopping tradition with their father.

Reggie and Samantha didn't find anything when they went, so today Julia, Lester and Addy have taken her to look.  If they don't find anything then I think it will finally be my turn to take her.  You know, I think that over the years I have talked quite a bit about loving our 4 daughters and surviving our 4 daughters.  The teenage years have never been the easiest for me, but they certainly are worth it.  And let me say one more time, I love that prom-dress shopping father of theirs!

what's the nickname for that condition?

I've been thinking a lot about Mariah lately.  She's been sick.  With mono.  (????????!!!!!!!!!!!)
Coincidentally her good friend is sick with the same thing.  What are the odds?

We hope they both get better soon.
(Luckily we met this good friend at Christmas
and think he's a great guy.)

Mariah's visit

This year we are getting a much needed, long visit with Mariah.  In the summer she only had a couple of days to come home but this December she is here for 2 weeks.  Luke insisted that he and Reggie wait to go to the Hobbit movie so that Mariah could go with them.  She went to the BYU game at AT&T park with Julia and Lester's side of the family.  Samantha is enjoying having Mariah as a roommate in the family room.  And Mariah and I went to see "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" the other night.  That is all besides the regular stuff - walks, games, baking, etc. etc.  Mariah brings even more energy and fun in to the house and I am so happy that we've had this time together.

Mariah's Home!

And not for very long, unfortunately.  She was only able to get a few days off from her new job.  But we'll take what we can get and make the most of it!

Like hiking around the Sutro Baths:

And walking on the cliffs:

They always get too close for my comfort

Apparently summer won't be complete without another trek through poison oak.

We love you Mariah!

LOOK WHO'S FAMOUS!

Mariah is featured on the cover of a newspaper in Utah called "Deseret News".  She did an extensive interview; I've included some of it here.  Ironically, the article is about young adults' online identity.  She even mentioned the existence of her Mom's blog. ( And for the record, I think I do pretty good at not embarassing my kids online Ha! Ha!)  She's such a cutie!

Straddling online and offline profiles, millennials search for identity

SALT LAKE CITY — Twenty-year-old Mariah Hanaike waits in the disconcerting silence of a temporary employment agency lobby in Redwood City, Calif. Though the interview has not yet begun, Hanaike said she knows she is being scrutinized before she shakes the hand of a potential employer.
“You know the person your going to meet is somewhere close in the building preparing for you, maybe by looking you up on Facebook or Googling your name, possibly reading an embarrassing entry about you on your mom's blog or being surprised to not find you on LinkedIn,” said Hanaike.
“I can't just be myself where and when I want because anything I do has the potential to end up on some site somewhere where anyone can look at it and judge. I feel like I need to water down who I am.”
Millenials, the term given for  those born between 1980 and 2000,  may be suffering from an identity crisis as they search for their authentic self. According to a recent online study, 1 out of 4 millennials say they can only be their true self when alone. As today’s twenty-somethings create online identities to market themselves professionally, as well as socially, some fear that the disparity between the two can prevent a young person from finding authentic self-definition.
Living life publicly
As today's younger generation navigates the transition to adulthood, reconciling between online and offline identities can be difficult.
