Thanksgiving Day

Our good friend, Jade Porter, hosted our entire family, including our sister-in-law and niece Linda and Leilani for Thanksgiving - even as our numbers continued to grow! We divided up the bringing of the food, which Reggie helped prepare at their house while watching football with Tom. At home Luke helped me make the rolls. He showed me a better way to shape them and they were perfect.

Jade managed to make it a sit-down dinner and the table was set beautifully - the plates, centerpieces, name-cards and all other little details made it feel so festive.

One of the favorite parts of the meal, for kids and adults alike, was the rice-crispy-treat drumsticks Jade made. So cute and so yummy!

We ate, talked, held babies, and even managed to spend some quality time playing cards while the kids played downstairs. It was just what we needed - to pause the to-do's and have fun. I don't think Jade will ever know how good it was for us, but I will do my best to tell her and thank her. When we got home that night the good mood we were all feeling was apparent as the girls and kids had an impromptu dance party with "Alexa" in the kitchen. Again, a rejuvenating and festive day!

Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving

Tuesday I had a good, early-as-I-could-trip to COSTCO. The rest of the day was about helping the Pineda children pass the time as they anxiously awaited their cousins. They did some art projects and, with Julia, helped clean the backyard. We took a quick trip to the beach before the sun went down, which is about 5 pm lately.

That night we got a call from Mariah saying that their Thanksgiving was to be postponed because some of Ross' extended family was sick, and so could they come and be with us. The answer was a happy Yes!

Wednesday afternoon everyone arrived! Our good friends Sabrina and Chris came over and helped the kids get in touch with Reggie's Mom's Filipino heritage with a Christmas craft. From Google:

A parol is a traditional Filipino, star-shaped Christmas lantern that represents the star the three wise men followed. In the Philippines, during the Festival of Lights, the traditional bamboo and paper parol (puh-roll), or star lantern, symbolizes the victory of light over darkness as well as hope and goodwill.

Coincidentally there is a cute Disney video featuring this craft tradition:

and a performance in one of our church's Christmas concerts. I wasn't able to find the video of just that song, so here is the concert and that song starts at 7:50. (p.s. I LOVE the one right before it from Brazil, and some others, and well maybe you should just watch the whole thing!)

The Saturday - Monday before Thanksgiving

It has been a whirlwind week. I meant to write down what I did each day because I don't want to forget - I want to remember even the joyous, little things. Now it is almost too late - but here is what I can remember:

Saturday Reggie and I cleaned the basement, turning it into a play room again for the grandkids. It was a sweet task that went remarkably fast so Samantha and I had time to run over to Target.

Sunday, after church, I worked on Christmas presents - especially the ones for Julia and family. Since they were coming for Thanksgiving I wanted the gifts all wrapped and packed to go home with them, and save on shipping costs. This went remarkably slow! Really just because of the finishing touches I needed to do on the doll clothes. It was fun, however, to have Reggie help me print, cut out and iron on the house patches for the Harry Potter doll robes.

Monday was very productive in getting the rooms ready for the family. I even had time to do some "Velcro Day" shopping (which I will explain in another post) and some walking, which I PROMISED myself I would do.

By Monday afternoon Julia called and asked if she could change the lodging arrangements and stay with us starting that night, and with her in-laws after Thanksgiving. Of course the answer was a fun Yes! So I really worked hard on finishing the present wrapping while they all hung out in the living room. After I took this picture I noticed "Bluey", who was not wrapped yet, peeking over the others.

one fear is stronger than the other

My kids have been using the term "FOMO" lately - meaning "the fear of missing out". This driving force has over-ridden the fear of irritating each other, the fear of not getting the best nights sleep, the fear of having to accommodate each other, etc. So during the holidays, and the summer, and other times when there is a special occasion they've been choosing fun over comfort and getting together. It is absolutely crazy - but so are we, and Reggie and I love it.

A year ago this little granddaughter wouldn't leave her parents' side. Since the summer she has been all smiles, however. I think she knows us now - from visit to visit. When she smiles at the camera like this it is priceless.  I am also including a song I have posted before, but it just fits too much not to post it again (though we are missing Lester as he couldn't get away from his new residency assignment. I will especially miss his judging of the ugly-sweater-cookie contest. Therefore I am including a picture of him from last year.)

The Little Ones

Jesus told his disciples to "suffer (or let) the little children come unto me". I believe he meant the ones who were there in that moment and the ones who would come afterward, through all generations. And so I am honored to work in the Primary and give the children - for such a few short years - the knowledge and re-assurance that He exists and loves them.

Our primary is small. In fact, there was one Sunday where there were only 2 children in attendance. This gave us the opportunity to prove to them that they are important and worth the time and effort - whether they are part of a big group or even just by themselves.

Our annual primary program in October went really well. We had 14 kids who participated by singing songs we'd been working on all year and giving talks. I think my favorite part was the musical number "Give Said The Little Stream" - they belted out the lyrics as loud as they could "Singing Singing all the day, give away oh give away!". I also felt the joy they gave to the congregation who clearly adore them all and have commented on how precious a day it was.

The day before the program we had an activity to practice, and then just have fun: a play dough and magnetic toy table, a marble art table, giant bubble making outside, and pizza for lunch. I took some pictures, just because. And then, on the way home, decided I should get the pictures developed and make posters of the children - with their artwork as a background - for people to see as they walked in. I was so mad at myself, however, because I was doing this last minute and even went to the wrong Walgreens to pick up the pictures. It took hours out of my day and I told myself it wasn't that important. But thankfully I didn't listen to myself (ha ha!) Again, seeing the adults reaction to the pictures was wonderful. But even better is seeing the kids' reaction. Weeks later I still see the kids stop, with their parents, to find themselves in the pictures as they are walking into the chapel. And I have noticed friendships form between the children throughout the year.

Two of the children were baptized recently. The Mom went up to the podium and talked about how the 8 year old was describing to his friends and family what he does on the weekends. He mentioned he goes to church and how much he enjoys primary. Any and all of the efforts by myself, the teachers, and the rest of the primary workers are rewarded a million times over throughout the year. That boy's teacher recently shared at the podium what a sweet spirit has come into his and his wife's life as they have taught primary and helped with the program.

Well, this is a long post - but lastly I wanted to mention how fun today was. Now that the program is over we are a little more relaxed with our singing time and can just have fun. Today's song was about how children all over the world say Thank You. We had a world map on the board which they loved looking and talking about. They were each given a card of different countries and had to match up where they were on the map and what language they speak. Who knew that children ages 3 to 11, and the adults in the room could have such a rousing discussion! We talked more than we sang, but by the end the board looked pretty impressive. One of the teachers took some pictures, and though I don't love sharing pictures of myself (though this makes 2 posts in a row now that I have) I want to remember my time as a Primary worker and how fun and sacred of a job it is.

I am looking forward to next week as we will sing this song again, and others to finish off November. With the one called "Autumn Time" we drop silk autumn leaves on the kids' heads which they think is hilarious, and with other songs we let them play instruments. Maybe we will even make it a field trip down the hallways and call it "The Primary Marching Band".
