I didn't know bat-rays could jump

Today we went down to Fisherman's Wharf and Rocio treated me and the kids to the "Aquarium By The Bay". It was great. My favorite part was the "petting Zoo" area. There were several bat rays that surprised me when they kept jumping/poking their heads out of the water. It was like they were as interested in us as we were in them.

I don't know the name of this kind of ray, but it was also friendly, poking its head out.

Another view;this one was inside a tank and up against the glass like this:

We also saw beautiful jelly fish:

We had a great time!

After the aquarium we had a picnic at the aquatic park, where this bird stole my peanut butter sandwich, still in the baggie! Luke tried to chase it down but the bird would not give it up.

We then finished the day with some fun in th waves.

"Fat Baby!"

Rocio and her kids got here at the beginning of June. From the first day her 3 year old started calling everybody "fat baby". It has become the family saying around here. Everyone who has passed through this house in the last several weeks has joined in on having a "fat baby!" conversation with Evani. Sometimes its a sweet-sounding "your a fat baby". Sometimes its a loud "FAT BABY YOU!" So last Sunday, we had about 30 people at the house. Evani was on "stage" with his fat baby comments and then Reggie apparantly dealt him the ultimate blow; Reggie said to him "your a skinny baby!". Evani burst into tears and was very angry with Reggie. I guess that "fat baby" was really a compliment all along.

So, remember, if anyone in my family calls you a "fat baby" in the near future, don't be offended; we are really paying you a compliment.

a few more favorites

As people with cameras are starting to share their pictures of Hillary and Andrew's wedding I am finding more and more favorites. Thank you Jordan and Suzanne for these:

Andrew was a handsome groom and Hillary was a beautiful bride. She has always liked the classics; things from the 1930s and 40s, and so she chose to wear a "birdcage" veil. It was very unique, very Hillary, and very beautiful.

A group picture of the Hanaike family members in attendence.

Getting ready to cut the cake. Note the traditional Hawaiian wedding leis they are wearing. (Mae made those as well!)

Starting their marriage off right!

First dance

My parent's and their children. This is the first time in a long time that all of my siblings and I have been together.

help!

One thing that blew me away this last weekend was the amount of help we received for the wedding, from so many people - help setting up, decorating, cleaning, etc. etc. Here are just a few examples: (warning: this is a very long post!)

My brother Lloyd is a school teacher in L.A. His school doesn't get out for another week, but he drove up for the wedding and was here for only about 24 hours. Before he started driving back, after the wedding, he stayed and helped clean up - specifically sweeping the gym floor (which is a big job)

A week before the wedding Dana Shipp called to ask if we needed any help. I thought about it and told her that if she had any ideas for how to make the buffet table look pretty I'd appreciate it. She said okay. The next day she came over to our house with platters and fabric and candles and baskets that she had just bought for the occasion. She and Norma set it all up Friday night and Saturday morning, and then they and Eric kept the tables running smoothly during the reception. The tables were beautiful.

My sister Lynette and her husband Roger came from Chicago for the wedding. It was the first time in a long time that all of my siblings were together. They volunteered to be the chauffers for my parents which was greatly appreciated.

As I said, Andrew's family was amazing. I feel bad that they didn't have more sight-seeing time, but they seemed very happy to help. Andrew's aunt spent alot of Thursday afternoon and all of Friday up at the church making the cakes. We asked Angie to open the building for us each of those days. She ended up helping with everything - from the cake to ironing table cloths, setting up tables, helping make the food, and cleaning up each night. She was at the building longer than we were. We couldn't have done it without her.

Mariah came home. She was a good babysitter at the temple.

Saul and Amy Valdez, and their children, have been good friends of ours for years. Last year, and this year, Saul offered their services as D.J.s for the weddings. They packed up all of their equipment and headed here from L.A. They wouldn't think of letting us pay for this, but they did let us compensate them with a batch of cookies. What a deal!

My brother and sister-in-law Tom and Madeline ended up being our runners. They made several trips to and from the building and our house throughout the reception, getting things that I had forgetten. It was great. They also let 2 of their daughters come and help with the set-up Friday. Everyone was so impressed with them - especially Melissa. She would not sit down and rest. She just kept saying "what can I do to help". We kept teasing her about having a boyfriend at college, and told her that we owe her when her wedding comes around. She's not engaged or anything, but we are standing by!

A Hanaike wedding cannot happen without the Porters. Jade put on a beautiful shower for Hillary in May. They let Hillary sleep at their house when Andrew was sleeping at ours and they let us store lots of the food in their kitchen the night before the wedding.

The Lualemaga's also spent most of the weekend at the building. Mae was the master mind of the ceiling decorations and she also did all of the flowers - the bouqets, boutenniers, etc. Her kids stayed at the building the whole time, and helped Luke have fun up there as well. Nua came to the building before and after work to help out.

Reggie's sister had some specific projects that she worked on before the wedding. She threw Hillary a shower. She painted all of the picture frames (that Reggie's brother made) and strung all the beads of pearls for the centerpieces. She helped with the set up and the clean up. As we were heading home after 10 hours at the building Friday night she asked me what I was making for dinner. At that point there were 17 people sleeping at our house. I hadn't even thought about dinner. She went home and then brought over a tri-tip roast, teriyaki chicken and rice - all nice and hot. What a life-saver.

Hillary and Andrew hired a wonderful photographer for up at the temple. I can't wait to see the pictures. They didn't, however, have anyone specific to take pictures at the reception. So when our good friend Josie walked into the reception Hillary asked her "can you please take some pictures!". Josie then went to work, and we really appreciate it.

Last year my niece Natalie and her boyfriend came for Julia's wedding. I think that by the time they arrived he had been upgraded to "fiance". They worked the whole weekend long, helping with everything. By Sunday afternoon Reggie took them on a quick driving tour of the city before they had to go back to school. This year they came as newlyweds to Hillary's wedding. I thought for sure that they would have time to sight-see. But again, they helped and helped and helped. Ray stuck right there with Reggie, Andrew and Lester setting up the lights and taking them down. By Saturday night we asked Ray to take our van full of tired kids home and then come back to get us and all the presents. I just have to say, you know that I trust and approve of someone if I am going to let them drive away in my van. We told them that one of these days they are going to have to come to San Francisco, not to work, but just for a visit.

My Julia came a week early. A couple of days after she got here her doctor called from Idaho to say that she ought to have her sore foot checked out by a doctor here. Turns out they said she had injured it pretty good and needed to wear a medical "boot" for the next several weeks. She still helped as much as she could - holding baby Cali who absolutely loved her, and then doing alot of the cooking for the reception. Lester came in Friday night and got right in and helped as well. Poor Julia - last year, the night before her wedding she slept on an air matress in the living room. This year, she still got an air matress, but at least got to share it with Lester. They were both really good sports.

Our sweet Rocio helped as much as she could with her 3 rugrats following behind her. She came up to the church for a while and ironed, but then needed to get her kids home. She ended up holding down the fort at home, as we sent more and more kids home ahead of us.

And lastly,my sister, Marianne. She is one of the hardest working people I know. As soon as her plane landed she was helping with everything, at home and at the church. Maybe its because we are sisters; maybe its because this is the house she grew up in; but when she is here its not that we finish each other's thoughts, but we finish each other's job. I rinse and she loads. I cook and she cleans. I drove a van full of supplies up to the church and then she drove back to pick up more people. Happily this year she was able to stay several days after the wedding, and so we had some relaxing time too, watching lots of chick flicks (the first being Emma, of course). Summer is just not summer without Marianne.

I'm sure there are even more, behind the scenes people, that helped in so many ways -taking down tables and chairs, cleaning and helping in any way they could.

We are so blessed, for all the people that helped, and all the people that traveled near and far to spend this wonderful day with us.

Meet the Dobbins

Andrew's family came in last Thursday - a couple of days before the wedding. I have to say, they are about the nicest in-laws I could wish for for my daughter. We enjoyed visiting with each other, going to the temple together, and setting up for the wedding all day Friday. Andrew's Mom, Dad, Aunts, Uncles, Sister, Brother in Law, etc. etc. pitched right in. The kids thought that Andrew's 17 year old brother was alot of fun. Andrew's Aunt made the wedding cake and several different sheet cakes to go with it that were SO beautiful and yummy.

Now that Hillary and Andrew have left for Alaska, to live with Andrew's family for several weeks, I feel very happy knowing that she is in such good hands. Andrew's parents told me how happy they were about this wedding, and how much they loved Hillary. I could see that it was true, in their faces and their actions all weekend long.

less blogging

Its not really that I am blogging less, its just that my computer won't "publish" my posts. So I blog at home and then go to the library, or other people's houses to get it done. Oh well!

Andrew's here

and apparently brought the sunshine with him. It was so cold and foggy the beginning of the week but since yesterday it has been warm and beautiful. I guess it is reflecting Hillary's heart. She was really hoping that the weather would turn nice so that all of the company could see what a beautiful place this is. I guess this is just her week! She is so in love. Only 3 more days!

Julia's home!

and this baby just loves her! There is alot to do for the wedding, and since Julia has a hurt ankle (she's not on crutches but does have to wear a walking "boot" thingy) her main job is to babysit. Cali is getting used to all of us, and she loves playing with Samantha and Luke, but Julia is the one she wants to hang out with the most.

Of course, even Cali can't take the place of Lester. He comes in on Friday, and Julia misses him terribly (psh, honeymooners).

Home improvement projects

When I wanted the kitchen painted this isn't exactly what I had in mind: (Thanks, Hillary.)

Luke makes good use of the ladder during dinner time.

I'm never making cookies again!

The last 2 times I made cookies something went very wrong. I think I made a mistake in measuring the flour. And, I stacked them on top of each other when they were still warm, so the next day you couldn't break them apart. Whats going on here!

06/15/11

Well, I'm back and so are the cookies. I took a little break (okay, a day) and have redeemed myself. But, maybe I should still cut back on the cookie making. Tzuri and Evani must think my name is "Cookie" because they ask me for cookies all the time. There have been some major temper fits around here when we've had to say "no more". Oh well.

the company is starting to arrive!

The baby, Cali.

Yesterday Rocio and her children arrived. They have come for the wedding and are going to stay with us for several weeks afterward. We have missed them! The kids are so much fun. Samantha and Luke have especially been enjoying playing with them and helping to take care of them.

Rocio and I are going to get in all the chick flicks we can while she is here. We're almost done with our first one - "Emma".

Life is good.

laws of nature

Luke has had some tough lessons this week about life and death in the animal world. He had a friend over last Friday, and as they were going in the backyard to play they came across a newborn kitten, right in front of the door. Here is the hard part - we know it had just been born because it was slimy, of course, but it also had its umbilical chord and amniotic sac attached to the stomach. We guess that the Mom gave birth right before they opened the backyard door, and it must have run away. I explained what the things were still attached to the kitten and then we decided to leave it alone, to see if the mother would come back for it. We went inside and watched out the window. They could hear it squealing the whole time, and they were very worried about it. After about an hour the Mom hadn't come back. When we saw a crow land near it we rushed back to the backyard to scare it away. I called animal control and they came and got the kitten. Luke asked if it was going to die. I had to explain to him that it would; that the mother was the only one that could feed it and keep it alive, and that the animal control people would kindly put it out of its misery. About an hour after the kitten was gone they went back in the backyard and came across the rest of the litter of kittens. These ones had nothing attached to them, and had all been licked clean. Luke was very sad that "James", as they named him, didn't survive, but he was happy to see the other ones doing okay. That evening there were fully grown cats in the backyard meowing away. Luke thought it was the Mom sadly calling for her kitten. Then I had to explain that when there are several cats making those sounds, and standing on the fence frozen, staring at each other, they are not looking for their babies. They are asking each other out on a date, and probably going to be making some more kittens soon. He understood what I was talking about, and thought it was gross.

Then today Luke's fish, Spinelli, died. Hillary brought this fish home for him for Christmas, all the way on the train from Utah. He was so sad. I explained to him that people just live longer than pets, and if you are going to have a pet, you are going to have to say goodbye to it eventually. He sent it to its "watery grave" by himself, and is not sure if he wants to get another one. (It is alot to go through, and reminds me of when I had to say goodbye to my childhood pet, Sinbad. But that is another story for another day.)

Life.
